Background
Rooted in 175 years of winemaking heritage, the 1847 Winery Tawny Collection represents the pinnacle of fortified wine craftsmanship. Ranging from 10-Year to the rare and distinguished 40-Year expression, each Tawny is a tribute to time, tradition, and terroir. All our Tawny wines are aged in carefully selected Tasmanian River Red Gum barrels, many of which have been in use for over 70 years—some for more than 120 years. These dense, seasoned casks impart remarkable structure and complexity, allowing for graceful oxidation and slow maturation over time. The result is a layered bouquet of dried fruits, roasted nuts, toffee, and warm spice, capturing the signature character of 1847’s fortified style.
Winemaking
1847 Winery Aged Tawny is primarily made from grape varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, primarily sourced from the Barossa region.Once fully ripe, the grapes are harvested and pressed to begin fermentation. During fermentation, temperature and timing are carefully managed to ensure balanced extraction of sugars and tannins. A high-strength grape spirit (typically around 77% alcohol) is then added to stop fermentation, preserving the natural sweetness of the wine. The fortified wine is transferred to seasoned oak barrels for aging. This typically matures in barrel for less than 10 years, during which time slow oxidation develops complex flavours of nuts, caramel, vanilla, and dried fruits.
Vintage Report
Each blend of 1847 Wines Tawny is a meticulous composition of multiple vintages and varietals, primarily sourced from the Barossa region. This multi-vintage approach allows the unique character of individual Barossa harvests to harmonise into a richly layered and consistently balanced fortified wine.
