Background
Pappy’s Paddock is a tribute to Gustav Gramp, the second-generation custodian of the 1847 Estate. Recognising the potential of a small parcel of land, Gustav selected it as the ideal site for premium vineyard planting. His sons, Hugo and Fred, later named it “Pappy’s Paddock” in his honour, planting vines to carry forward his legacy. Today, this wine continues to reflect the Gramp family’s deep respect for the land, their commitment to quality, and the enduring bond between generations. Each bottle from Pappy’s Paddock captures the spirit of tradition, craftsmanship, and the vineyard that started it all.
Winemaking
This 2023 Semillon was sourced solely from Gully Winds block 19 in Rowland Flat planted in 1984. After a cool night harvest on the 21st of February the grapes were crushed and gently drained, collecting only the delicate free run juice. This juice was cold settled, and the clear juice was then racked to tank for a cool slow fermentation to retain fruit purity. Following clarification and tank maturation a portion of the wine was then oak aged to give additional layers of complexity.
Vintage Report
A mild spring and summer defined the growing season, with consistent rainfall during winter and early spring helping to replenish soil moisture. The absence of extreme heatwaves allowed for even flowering and fruit set, resulting in healthy vine growth and excellent canopy development. The cooler-than-average ripening period in February and March extended hang time on the vines, allowing for gradual flavour accumulation and preservation of natural acidity. Harvest began later than usual, with picking stretching into April for many red varieties. While yields remained below the long-term average in some vineyards due to reduced bunch sizes, the overall fruit quality was outstanding
