$320.00

Product Description

Lovers of rich, bold, and generous Barossa Shiraz will feel right at home with this wine. It shows an alluring maroon to black hue, with a complex bouquet of chocolate, licorice, spices, soy sauce, black olives, and blackberries. The oak influence is noticeable at this stage but is integrating well. Those patient enough to cellar this wine will be richly rewarded. On the palate, it is seamless and silky, supported by just the right touch of acidity and impressive persistence. The tannins are fine and smooth, with a long, elegant finish.

Background

Grand Pappy’s is a tribute to the founding generation of the 1847 Estate and our very first vigneron. Chosen for his courage, vision, and deep connection to the land, Grand Pappy laid the foundation for generations to come. This wine is crafted from our oldest, most exceptional vines, grown in select parcels of the Barossa Valley. Aged in fine oak and made in only the best vintages, Grand Pappy’s reflects the pinnacle of our winemaking—rich in flavour, refined in structure, and deeply rooted in family heritage. It is the purest expression of tradition, craftsmanship, and the land that started it all.

Winemaking

The grapes for Grand Pappy’s Shiraz are sourced in the Barossa Valley, featuring vines aged between 35 to 75 years. These vines are predominantly dry-grown, resulting in low yields but highly concentrated fruit.  Harvesting is done by hand to ensure the selection of the best quality grapes.  Post-harvest, the grapes undergo destemming and crushing before being transferred to open fermenters. Fermentation spans 14 to 16 days, during which a portion of the juice is deliberately discarded to enhance flavor concentration. The must is plunged twice daily to extract optimal color, flavor, and tannins.  Following fermentation, the wine is pressed and then matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months.

Vintage Report

The 2020 vintage in the Barossa Valley was one of stark contrast: yields plunged to at least 50% below the 10‑year average, driven by dry winters and springs, inconsistent spring weather, and extremely hot conditions in December and early January.   Despite these challenges, the later summer months brought welcome relief—cooler February temperatures and light rainfall allowed for slower, more even ripening, preserving natural acidity and helping develop flavour in the fruit.

While overall grape volumes were significantly reduced, fruit quality was notably high, with intense color and concentrated flavours giving wines exceptional depth and structure. As a result, these wines are expected to be in high demand both domestically and internationally.

James Halliday
94 Points
“Deep crimson in the glass with concentrated dark plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits cut with hints of baking spices, fruitcake, earth, roasting meats, licorice, dark chocolate and turned earth. Savoury with a rich fruit flow, tight, fine sandy tannins and some nice mineral velocity, finishing long with a slightly broody dark-fruited stare”.
