2016 170th Anniversary Edition Shiraz

$90.00

Product Description

A deep garnet hue with a purple rim, hinting at both its richness and aging potential. On the nose, it opens generously with layers of dark cherry, blackberry, and ripe cranberry, interwoven with lifted notes of mocha, dark chocolate, and a subtle touch of dried violets. Hints of sweet vanilla, nutmeg, and finely toasted American oak emerge with time in the glass, adding warmth and complexity. The palate is plush yet structured, with a core of silky tannins supporting the concentrated fruit. Flavours of black forest fruits and spiced plum unfold, balanced by well-integrated oak that imparts gentle sweetness and creamy texture. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and harmonious, leading into a lingering finish marked by cocoa powder, clove, and a whisper of smoky cedar.

Background

“170” is a limited-edition wine specially crafted by 1847 Winery to commemorate its 170th anniversary. Each year, three varietals are produced irregularly: a single-varietal Shiraz, a single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, or a classic Shiraz-Cabernet blend — all made primarily from Barossa vines over 35 years old.

More than just a bottle of wine, it is a tribute that transcends time. Since 1847, we have remained deeply rooted in the Barossa Valley, passing down the art of winemaking from generation to generation, holding true to our passion through every challenge. “170” embodies the craftsmanship and pride of our winemakers — a symbol of legacy, resilience, and hope for the future.

Winemaking

Harvested in the cool of early morning to preserve freshness and varietal purity, the grapes were gently destemmed and cold soaked to enhance colour extraction and aromatic complexity.  Fermentation took place in traditional open fermenters over 7 to 10 days, with regular pump-overs and gentle cap management to balance intensity with finesse.   After fermentation, the wine was pressed and transferred to oak barrels for maturation.  The wine spent 18 months in oak, comprising approximately 70% American oak and 30% French oak, with a portion of new barrels used.

Vintage Report

The 2016 vintage in Barossa Valley was marked by an early start and ideal ripening conditions. A dry winter and spring were followed by a warm summer, with timely rainfall in January and February that refreshed the vines and allowed for steady fruit development. These favourable conditions led to an early and compressed harvest, with fruit reaching full ripeness quickly and evenly.  Yields were generally average to above average, and fruit quality was outstanding across both red and white varieties. The wines from 2016 are known for their vibrant fruit intensity, excellent colour, fine tannin structure, and balanced natural acidity. It is regarded as a strong, reliable vintage that produced wines with depth, generosity, and good aging potential.
