Background
Rooted in 175 years of winemaking heritage, the 1847 Winery Tawny Collection represents the pinnacle of fortified wine craftsmanship. Ranging from 10-Year to the rare and distinguished 40-Year expression, each Tawny is a tribute to time, tradition, and terroir. All our Tawny wines are aged in carefully selected Tasmanian River Red Gum barrels, many of which have been in use for over 70 years—some for more than 120 years. These dense, seasoned casks impart remarkable structure and complexity, allowing for graceful oxidation and slow maturation over time. The result is a layered bouquet of dried fruits, roasted nuts, toffee, and warm spice, capturing the signature character of 1847’s fortified style.
Winemaking
The 1847 Winery 20-Year-Old Aged Tawny is a superb expression of time, patience, and craftsmanship. Made from select parcels of fortified base wine, primarily Shiraz and Grenache from the Barossa Valley, the wine is aged in small, seasoned oak barrels—many crafted from century-old Tasmanian River Red Gum. Over two decades of maturation, the wine undergoes slow, natural oxidation, gaining remarkable concentration, complexity, and silk-like texture. The final blend draws on multiple vintages, ensuring a harmonious balance of richness, elegance, and depth, true to the legacy of 1847 Winery.
Vintage Report
Each blend of 1847 Wines Tawny is a meticulous composition of multiple vintages and varietals, primarily sourced from the Barossa region. This multi-vintage approach allows the unique character of individual Barossa harvests to harmonise into a richly layered and consistently balanced fortified wine.

95 Points
“Lighter colour than the 10 Year Old, grading towards a tawny hue on the rim; spicy Christmas cake complexity is neatly balanced by rancio”.
