Background
The “Barrel 88” series takes its name from an oak barrel numbered 88 in the cellar of 1847 Winery. Years ago, a trial batch aged in this particular barrel delivered exceptional balance and complexity, far beyond expectations. Since then, Barrel 88 has become a symbol within the winery.
In tribute to this serendipitous success, the series was created — crafted with premium grapes and carefully matured in oak to continue the legacy that began with one extraordinary barrel.
Winemaking
Classic 88 Shiraz is made from 25-year-old Barossa vines. The grapes were harvested in March, then crushed and destemmed before being transferred into fermenters. Yeast was added to initiate fermentation. During fermentation, the must was pumped over twice daily to extract colour, flavour, and tannins. The wine remained on skins for six days and was pressed on the seventh day. It was then matured for at least 16 months in a combination of American oak (30%) and French oak (70%) before bottling.
Vintage Report
The 2022 vintage in Barossa Valley was shaped by a cool, wet spring followed by a mild summer, resulting in a later-than-usual harvest. These slower ripening conditions allowed for excellent flavour development and natural acidity retention, particularly in red varieties. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon displayed great depth, fine tannin structure, and vibrant fruit character. While yields were below average due to cooler flowering conditions, the quality of the fruit was outstanding. Winemakers consider 2022 a classic Barossa vintage, delivering wines with freshness, balance, and cellaring potential.
