Background
Grand Pappy’s is a tribute to the founding generation of the 1847 Winery and our very first vigneron. Chosen for his courage, vision, and deep connection to the land, Grand Pappy laid the foundation for generations to come. This wine is crafted from our oldest, most exceptional vines, grown in select parcels of the Barossa Valley. Aged in fine oak and made in only the best vintages, Grand Pappy’s reflects the pinnacle of our winemaking—rich in flavour, refined in structure, and deeply rooted in family heritage. It is the purest expression of tradition, craftsmanship, and the land that started it all.
The Grand Pappy’s Gold Shiraz is sourced from the finest areas of Barossa Valley, perfectly suited for growing Shiraz. The soil consists of deep red sandy loam, rich in minerals and excellent for drainage, providing ideal conditions for vine growth.
The vineyards are located at elevations between 200 and 250 meters, with a unique microclimate that enhances Shiraz with concentrated fruit flavors and spicy. aromatics.
Winemaking
Grapes for the 2019 Grand Pappy’s Shiraz were picked in February and March, crushed and stemmed into small batch fermenters where the must was inoculated with yeast. The ferments were pumped over a twice a day to extract colour, flavour and tannin. The wines were left on skins for six days and on the seventh were pressed out. The wines were then matured in a mix American and French oak for at least 22 months before the wine was bottled.
Vintage Report
The 2019 vintage in the Barossa Valley was marked by lower-than-average yields but exceptional fruit quality. A dry winter and spring, combined with limited rainfall and several heat spikes during summer, resulted in small berry size and concentrated flavors. While overall yields were down—particularly in dry-grown vineyards—the grapes harvested were of outstanding intensity and balance. Red varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache showed excellent color, structure, and depth, with firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The vintage favored producers who managed irrigation and canopy well, allowing them to craft wines of remarkable richness and aging potential. 2019 is considered a low-yield, high-quality year for the region.
