Background

“170” is a limited-edition wine specially crafted by 1847 Winery to commemorate its 170th anniversary. More than just a bottle of wine, it is a tribute that transcends time. Since 1847, we have remained rooted in the Barossa Valley, passing down the art of winemaking from generation to generation, staying true to our passion through every challenge. “170” embodies the dedication and pride of our winemakers — a symbol of legacy, resilience, and hope for the future.

The vineyards are situated at elevations between 200 and 300 meters, with abundant sunlight and significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps the grapes achieve an excellent balance between sugar and acidity. The vines average over 35 years of age, producing low yields of exceptional quality that perfectly showcase the unique terroir of the Barossa Valley.

Winemaking

This Barossa Valley red blend comprises 80% Shiraz and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from select vineyards chosen for their concentration, balance, and regional expression. The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness, then gently destemmed and fermented in small, temperature-controlled open fermenters. Regular pump-overs were carried out to ensure even extraction of colour, flavour, and fine tannins while preserving varietal purity.  Post-fermentation, the wines were matured separately for 22 months in a combination of 70% French oak and 30% American oak barrels before blending.

Vintage Report

The 2020 vintage in the Barossa Valley was defined by low yields and concentrated quality. A dry winter and spring led to reduced fruit set, while hot, dry conditions throughout the growing season placed stress on the vines, resulting in significantly lower-than-average yields across the region.  However, the smaller crop delivered exceptional fruit intensity, with rich colour, powerful structure, and ripe tannins. Despite the challenges, careful vineyard management and selective harvesting ensured outstanding quality in many parcels.  While volumes were limited, the 2020 wines from Barossa show great depth, intensity, and aging potential, reflecting the resilience of the region and the skill of its growers and winemakers.

“Crimson with aromas of plush dark plum, blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry fruits with hints of baking spice, licorice, dark chocolate, panforte, fruitcake, jasmine and earth. Fruit-pure and built for the long haul with excellent fruit density and fine tannins and acid drive, finishing with a sweep of cassis, cedar and spice. Pop it away for a few years”.

“This is a powerhouse Barossa blend from a warm but excellent vintage. IT’s a tried and true combination in Australia and this one is a perfect illustration of why it wors so well. Immediately the aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and chocolate become evident. Then the influence of black cherry and loamy turned earth appear. On the palate is plush and polished with a massive hit of concentrated flavour. Has many years ahead of it in the cellar”.
