Background
“170” is a limited-edition wine specially crafted by 1847 Winery to commemorate its 170th anniversary. More than just a bottle of wine, it is a tribute that transcends time. Since 1847, we have remained rooted in the Barossa Valley, passing down the art of winemaking from generation to generation, staying true to our passion through every challenge. “170” embodies the dedication and pride of our winemakers — a symbol of legacy, resilience, and hope for the future.
The vineyards are situated at elevations between 200 and 300 meters, with abundant sunlight and significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps the grapes achieve an excellent balance between sugar and acidity. The vines average over 35 years of age, producing low yields of exceptional quality that perfectly showcase the unique terroir of the Barossa Valley.
Winemaking
The grapes are handpicked and carefully selected, then fermented at low temperatures in open fermenters to preserve their vibrant fruit flavors. The wine is subsequently matured for 22 months in new French oak barrels (70%) and new American oak barrels (30%) to enhance complexity and structure.
Vintage Report
The 2019 vintage in the Barossa Valley was marked by lower-than-average yields but exceptional fruit quality. A dry winter and spring, combined with limited rainfall and several heat spikes during summer, resulted in small berry size and concentrated flavors. While overall yields were down—particularly in dry-grown vineyards—the grapes harvested were of outstanding intensity and balance. Red varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache showed excellent color, structure, and depth, with firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The vintage favored producers who managed irrigation and canopy well, allowing them to craft wines of remarkable richness and aging potential. 2019 is considered a low-yield, high-quality year for the region.

“Oh, wow, this is a wonderful example of Barossa cabernet, showing that when the seasons hangs together it can produce world-class cabernets. Highly aromatic nose with an underpinning blackcurrant but lifted swirls of blackberry, blueberry and assorted red fruits. The palate is rich and powerful but held with firm chalky tannins and a solid amount of supporting oak. Dark chocolate and black fruits with a distinctly silky mouthfeel. Excellent”.

“Rich and opulent, the wine shows cassis, cigar, toasted spice, cedar and dark chocolate aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers terrific weight and plush texture, backed by layers of polished tannins, making it sturdy and sumptuous at the same time with a sustained, satisfying finish”.
